2025 Summer Associate Position: Loyola Patent Law Interview Program Applicants ONLY

Marshall, Gerstein & Borun LLP is a Chicago-based intellectual property law firm with over 85 attorneys, highly qualified patent agents, and technical specialists, all dedicated to providing superior intellectual property counseling. We specialize in prosecution and litigation in all areas of intellectual property law. We litigate nationwide, primarily within the federal court system, and obtain patents and trademark registrations for our clients in the United States and foreign patent and trademark offices. During the summer, we expose our summer associates to realistic, substantive legal assignments tackling issues across intellectual property disciplines, including litigation, prosecution, and transactional.

 

We look for candidates with bright legal minds and demonstrated technical ability. The ideal candidate enjoys a thirst for learning, has a dedicated work ethic, and an ability to work effectively in teams. Each candidate should have at least one technical/science degree, with an advanced degree preferred. In rare cases, we will consider exceptional candidates without such degrees, but with otherwise demonstrated technical ability. We also appreciate the value diversity builds in our practice of law and look for candidates from diverse backgrounds that can bring a breadth of experience to our team. 

Qualified candidates must possess:

  • Strong academic credentials, which should minimally include a science (e.g. chemistry, biology) or engineering undergraduate degree.
  • Advanced degrees are preferred, but not required.
  • GPAs of at least 3.0 in all levels of education.
  • Excellent communication skills-both written and verbal-and exceptional research and organizational skills.
  • Ability to grasp new technical teachings quickly and enjoy a thirst for learning.

During the summer, we expose our summer associates to realistic, substantive legal assignments tackling issues across intellectual property disciplines, including litigation, prosecution, and transactional. We also have many social events throughout the summer that take advantage of the culture and richness of Chicago and that help build camaraderie with our legal professionals.

Compensation for this position is $3,800 per week, with a minimum of 10 weeks preferred.

Intellectual Property Litigation Associate

We litigate nationwide, primarily within the federal court system, and obtain patents and trademark registrations for our clients in the United States and foreign patent and trademark offices around the world.

We are currently seeking a talented Associate to join our Litigation practice group. The right individual will have:
 

  • Strong academic credentials including a strong record in law school and an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering or computer science preferred (other engineering or science degrees will be considered).
  • 2-5 years of experience in patent litigation.
  • License to practice law in Illinois (or licensed to practice law in another state and qualified to sit for the Illinois bar exam).
  • Excellent communication skills--both written and verbal--and exceptional organizational skills.

Responsibilities:

  • This position demands that the individual will assume significant client responsibilities, provide high-quality services to domestic and foreign clients, communicate with all levels of management and staff and, at times, will require a significant degree of autonomy.
  • Specific responsibilities will include all aspects of patent litigation (e.g. development of strategies, taking discovery, working with experts and other witnesses, drafting motions and other court filings, court appearances, and supporting and participating in trials). Secondarily, opportunities exist for involvement in patent prosecution and transactional/licensing matters, subject to the candidate’s interest and the Firm’s needs.

Compensation for this position includes an annual salary highly competitive within the Chicago market for law firm associates at the experience level specified herein, along with customary benefits and opportunities to earn significant bonuses.  Customary benefits include:
